GRADES ARE IN!!

So after a long week of waiting for my last grade to come in...it finally has been posted. And I am thoroughly surprised and happy with the grades I received. Let me break it down for you.
ENS 305: B+
Abnormal Psychology: B+
RWS 305: A-
I was basically MIA from the world for those 7 weeks and I was still surprised with what I walked away with. My classes weren't particularly the easiest classes, however they weren't extremely demanding. Just throw work into the mix and my stress level went up the wall. But this is only because I am definitely one of those people that like plans out their day ahead of time in their head. I kind of figure out how long this and that will take and just watching the hours diminish in my head makes me stressed because I know all of my tasks will probably take longer than planned. Also the fact that each day, there's always a curve ball thrown at you that just throws everything off balance and I can't handle that. There just aren't enough hours in the day to do all the things I wanted to do mainly because the reading requirements for each class were out the window. Each teacher swore that all of us students weren't crazy enough to take 3 classes in one summer session. So for 7 weeks I always had a book attached to my hand. But the times have changed. More time for fun, yet not enough time to make it to the beach.

On another note, I would love to mention how much I love my iPhone. Today I was able to register for my classes from the comfort of my own hostess stand at work. I no longer have to rely on other to do it for me if I'm unable to be at the computer. I was really stoked about it today. Aaah technology! You never cease to amaze me. Plus, I discovered ATT wifi at my work. GOLDEN! However, it was kind of lagging when I tried to use it so I relied upon the wonders of the 3G network. The easiness of the iPhone and its accessibility just makes it literally like a labtop in the palm of my hands. I'm not going to lie, when I'm at home and want to go on the internet I will grab my phone before I go on my labtop. A very well spent $300 in my opinion.

And still I'm interested in picking up some reading now that I have more free time. Anyone want to offer up some suggestions? I don't read enough to know what kind of reading I like, so I'm up for anything. Hit me with your best shot.

Good job on the grades.

I recommend Watchmen. You may have seen the previews during the Dark Knight.

Congratulations on the grades!

As for reading suggestions let me suggest a wide range of books that you can choose from.

For really light reading, you can do a lot worse than Sex, Drugs, And Cocoa Puffs. It's a collection of essays that "takes the reader on a witty and highly entertaining tour through portions of pop culture not usually subjected to analysis and presents his thoughts on Saved by the Bell, Billy Joel, amateur porn, MTV's The Real World, and much more." The fact that they're just a collection of short essays means many subjects are touched upon, which means it rarely gets to be boring, and it's easy to finish an essay or two during a short break.

Another fine collection of essays is Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. Very funny autobiographical work broken up into short stories. "Sedaris's caustic gift has not deserted him in his fourth book, which mines poignant comedy from his peculiar childhood in North Carolina, his bizarre career path, and his move with his lover to France.... Sedaris does have a theme in these reminiscences: the inability of humans to communicate..... Every glimpse we get of Sedaris's family and acquaintances delivers laughs and insights." Many of these essays are longer than the ones in Sex, Drugs, And Cocoa Puffs but it is a page turner. I have most of his books but this is by far the best of them.

Not into essays? Well you can give Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. "Christopher Moore presents a funny, lighthearted satire of the life of Christ--from his childhood days up to his crucifixion." Think of it as the comedic opposite of The Da Vinci Code. It does poke fun at Christianity but without at all being disrespectful. And it's a good buddy-buddy and coming of age story.

If you're not into light, comedic fiction and you want something that will educate you as you read, I can offer up Stumbling on Happiness. "In his witty and engaging new book, Harvard professor Gilbert reveals his take on how our minds work, and how the limitations of our imaginations may be getting in the way of our ability to know what happiness is." It's very readable (meaning it's very easy to grasp the concepts presented) and insightful. It's also somewhat entertaining for what is essentially a psychology book.

If you want something a bit heavier to read than Stumbling on Happiness, I would suggest either of Malcolm Gladwell's books, Blink or The Tipping Point. I've only read The Tipping Point and it's a little bit denser than Stumbling On Happiness but still very readable.

Six very different books for you to choose from. You've got humorous essays on pop culture, a humorous autobiographical work, a humorous fictional reworking of the Bible, an entertaining (and sometimes humorous) psychology book, and a sometimes humorous work on sociology. Ok, so maybe not so different in that they all have made me laugh to some extent but they each do come from a distinct genre so you could sample and find out more about what you like to read.

Also, all of them are fairly popular and most of the authors have more than just that one book mentioned (although I would start with the ones I mentioned as I believe they're the best of what each author has to offer) so you can definitely follow each one up with another book if you especially like any of them.

If you do go with any of these, let me know what you think afterwards or if you read something else that you find interesting do let me know about that as well.

Happy Reading!
